Heavenly Death by Chocolate Trifle

> Perfect for: Potlucks, PTA meetings, office luncheons.

> Make and take: Bake the brownies the day before and put the frozen topping in the refrigerator to thaw. The trifle can be assembled the night before or the day of the event.

> Made famous by: Emily Whitley and Pam Schmidt, Gwinnett co-workers, who tag-teamed to create this dessert for a crowd. "We have been playing around with different fruit trifles, and Pam was looking for something unique to try for some co-workers and friends, " Whitley wrote. "I suggested she try to do a death by chocolate with layers of chocolate and try using strawberries in between the layers.

"So that night Pam took my fruit trifle recipe ... and turned it into a Heavenly Death by Chocolate recipe that is entirely new to us."

> Tip: If you're afraid of having most of a bag of Oreos left over, just skip them. With all this chocolate, you'll never miss them.

Hands on time: 30 minutes  Total time: 2 hours  Serves: 20

Ingredients:

    Heavenly Death by Chocolate Trifle

1 package fudge brownie mix for an 8-inch pan, plus ingredients listed in instructions

1 small (3.9-ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix, plus ingredients listed in instructions

1 (8-ounce) container frozen nondairy whipped topping, thawed

    10 Oreo cookies, crushed

Hershey's chocolate syrup, regular or dark

2 pints strawberries, rinsed, patted dry and sliced

Instructions:

Prepare the pudding according to package instructions. Fold in the topping and set aside.

In a large glass trifle dish, sprinkle a layer of crushed Oreos (you may use them all or set aside some to sprinkle over the top of the trifle).

On top of the Oreos, layer half the brownies. Drizzle with chocolate syrup. Top with half the strawberries. Spread with half the pudding mixture. Then repeat the layers, using the rest of the brownies, another drizzling of chocolate syrup, the rest of the strawberries and finally the rest of the pudding mixture. Smooth the top of the pudding, then drizzle with more chocolate syrup. (If you reserved some of the crushed Oreos, you can sprinkle them on top, too.) Chill until serving.
