Basic Buttercream Frosting

This frosting can be left white or tinted with food coloring. To make orange frosting, use 1 to 2 drops red and 2 to 3 drops yellow coloring. -- Deborah Geering, for the Journal-Constitution

Ingredients:

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, room temperature
1 pound (4 cups) confectioners’ sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions:
In a mixing bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla and 1 tablespoon milk. If the frosting is too thick to spread easily, beat in an additional tablespoon milk.
