Alton Brown’s new book, “Feasting on Asphalt: The River Run,” is a companion to the series of the same name that aired on the Food Network in fall 2007. The goal of Brown and his crew was to find the best roadside food and to showcase the people who prepare and serve it.
The book is part travel diary and part cookbook, with lots of pictures and stories from the trip, along with 40 recipes, including this delicious milkshake.

Don’t be afraid of the vodka, Brown says about this recipe. Each shake calls for such a little amount, it will have no effect on kids, or you. But the vodka really enhances the flavor. The syrup recipe was an old-time cough remedy.

Hands on time: 15 minutes  Total time: 1 hour and 15 minutes  Serves: 2

Ingredients:

    FOR THE SYRUP:

    2 cups water
    10 ounces granulated sugar
    1 1/2 teaspoons cherry flavoring
    1/4 teaspoon red food coloring
    2 teaspoons vodka

    FOR THE SHAKE:
1 quart old-fashioned-style vanilla ice cream
    1/4 cup cherry syrup
    1/2 cup whole milk

Instructions:

To make the syrup:
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the water and sugar and cook until the sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the cherry flavoring, food coloring and vodka. Let the cherry syrup mixture cool completely before using, about an hour. (This makes about 2 1/2 cups syrup. Store leftover syrup, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.)

To make the shake:
In a blender, combine the ice cream, cherry syrup and milk. Blend until well-combined. Do not overblend or the shake will be too thin. Divide between 2 glasses and serve immediately with straws.
