What Can I Bring?
Perfect for: Holiday parties.
Make and take: Bake, cool and pack in reclosable plastic bags or cookie tins.
Made famous by: Sue Landa of LaGrange, who has been making these for more than 25 years. "I first tasted this cookie at a child's birthday party in the '70s, " she said. "I cornered the mom at the party and said I must have this recipe! It originally came from a relative of hers in Germany who was a baker. The texture is wonderful -- and no chilling at all!"
Hands on time: 45 minutes Total time: 1 hour and 15 minutes Serves: 2 dozen
Ingredients:
-
1 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 (1-pound) box confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons (or more) milk
A few drops food coloring
Decorator sprinkles (optional)
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Using electric beaters and a large mixing bowl, cream butter and granulated sugar. Add egg and vanilla and blend. In a small bowl, combine 2 cups flour with salt, baking powder and cream of tartar. Blend into creamed mixture. Gradually add enough additional flour to make a soft, pliable dough. If you add too much flour, the cookies will be tough and crack, so add flour slowly and stop mixer and check with your fingers. Use dough immediately; roll out onto lightly floured surface to 1/8 inch. Cut with cookie cutters and place on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake 9 to 11 minutes until golden brown on edges. Transfer cookies to wire racks and cool.
Blend confectioners' sugar with enough milk to make a mixture the thickness of glue. Divide the frosting among several bowls and add a drop or two of food coloring. Frost cookies; decorate with sprinkles if desired.
