What Can I Bring?

Perfect for: Family dinners, potlucks, picnics.
Make and take: Cover baking dish and carry to event. Serve warm, cold or at room temperature.
Made famous by: David Ingram of Nelson, who got the recipe from a Lockheed co-worker who had brought the dish to an office Christmas gathering. "I have taken this to several family holiday get-togethers and to covered-dish suppers at my church, " Ingram said. "It is always a hit and gets rave reviews. I always end up having to give the recipe to people."

Hands on time: 20 minutes  Total time: 1 hour and 20 minutes  Serves: 10

Ingredients:

4 cups peeled, cored and thinly sliced tart apples (3-4 apples)
    2 cups fresh cranberries
    1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
    1 cup oats
    1/2 cup packed brown sugar

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, toss together apples, cranberries and sugar. Let sit until juices begin to form, about 10 minutes. Turn into a lightly greased 9-by-9-inch or 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes.
While fruit cooks, prepare topping. Melt butter in a glass dish in the microwave or in a saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in nuts, oats and brown sugar. Sprinkle topping over fruit and bake another 20 minutes, or until topping is lightly browned and juices are bubbling.

Notes:

> Tip: If you bake the dessert in a glass dish, you can re-warm it in the microwave before serving.
