This is an ideal meal for when guests drop by and you want to serve them something a little more substantive and dressier than a “regular old” hot dog. Or for a cold winter’s night when you have a hankering for dawg, but don’t feel like firing up the grill. Best of all, they’re a quick, filling meal in a pinch (most of these ingredients can easily be kept on hand) and also portable. You can make ’em ahead, then zap later in a microwave at the office.

Hands on time: 20 minutes  Total time: 1 hour  Serves: 8

Ingredients:

2 cups sliced hot dogs (about 8 hot dogs)
1/3 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
    2 hard boiled eggs, chopped
    3 tablespoons chili sauce
    2 tablespoons pickle relish
    1 teaspoon mustard
    3/4 teaspoon garlic salt
    8 hot dog buns

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Gently combine hot dogs, cheese, eggs, chili sauce, relish, mustard and garlic salt. Fill buns with hot dog mixture and close. Wrap each bun in aluminum foil.
Place wrapped buns well-spaced on baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until cheese in mixture is melted and gooey. — Adapted by Larry Vejnoska from a 1980s magazine recipe
