What Can I Bring?
Perfect for: Parties, Mother's Day.
Make and take: Bake and cool in a 9-by-13-inch cake pan; top with whipped cream and strawberries. If your pan does not have a lid, cover loosely with foil or plastic wrap to transport. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
Made famous by: Sandra Tennyson of East Point, who first made it as an impromptu Mother's Day dessert. "It was a smash, " she said. Now whenever she's invited to potluck parties, she said, "This is what I am asked to bring."
If you've never made your own sweetened whipped cream, you'll be surprised at how simple it is. Or you can use a prepared nondairy whipped topping.
Hands on time: 30 minutes Total time: 2 hours Serves: 12
Ingredients:
-
1 box yellow cake mix, plus ingredients listed on box
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pound fresh strawberries, sliced
Instructions:
Prepare cake as instructed on box for a 9-by-13-inch single-layer cake. Cool in pan.
In a large, chilled mixing bowl, beat whipping cream, confectioners' sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Spread whipping cream on top of cooled cake. Arrange strawberry slices on top.

Notes:
> Tip: Tennyson prefers to make this as a two-layer round cake. Use two 9-inch round cake pans; bake cake as instructed and invert onto wire racks to cool. To frost, place one layer on a serving plate and spread with some of the whipped cream. Sprinkle with sliced berries. Top with remaining cake layer, frost top and sides with remaining whipped cream and decorate with strawberry slices.
