Old Country Irish Soda Bread

This is a traditional recipe., with the result a more breadlike consistency. It's best served warm with butter or marmalade. -- Mary MacDonald

Hands on time: 15 minutes  Total time: 30 minutes  Serves: 6

Ingredients:

    2 cups all-purpose flour

    1 teaspoon baking soda

    1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

    1 heaping teaspoon salt

    1 cup buttermilk

    1 tablespoon heavy cream

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Lightly grease an 8- or 9-inch cake pan. In a bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Add the buttermilk and the cream and mix to a medium-stiff dough. Turn onto a floured board and knead into a round ball. Flatten slightly and put into a pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.
